Frequently Asked Questions
The history of Dilatoflex® expansion joints in the energy sector dates back to the early 1960s. While energy applications are often associated with hot water and steam networks, some of the first Dilatoflex® elastomer expansion joints were supplied for large diameter gas pipelines used in power generation installations. Hard to believe, but some of them are still in service today, testament to the durability and reliability of Dilatoflex® expansion joints.
Dilatoflex® elastomeric expansion joints are typically supplied with standard face-to-face lengths, following established industry practice. For small sizes up to DN 200, standard lengths are generally 130 mm or 150 mm. For sizes up to DN 500, standard options include 130mm, 200mm and 300mm. For medium and large diameters, the face-to-face length can in some cases be adapted to the project requirements. A minimum installation length of 250mm is however required to ensure sufficient clearance for the rubber bellows geometry and flange bolt head clearance.
Dilatoflex® expansion joints are designed to offer great flexibility and high displacement compensation capacity. To determine whether a expansion joint with an atypical face-to-face length can be replaced with a Dilatoflex® model, the required movements must be taken into account. For example, a face-to-face length of 165mm can often be accommodated by a Dilatoflex® Type T expansion joint with a nominal length of 150mm, installed in the extended position approximately 15mm. In some cases, a minor adjustment of the piping or the installation of an additional spacer may be necessary to adapt the installation space to the selected Dilatoflex® expansion joint.
In addition to material certificates, dimensional control reports and pressure test certificates, Dilatoflex® can provide additional project documentation, including a Quality Plan. Customers can also witness certain stages of production and testing. Due to the confidential nature of certain manufacturing processes, these services are subject to prior agreement and may generate additional costs.
