Expansion joints provide effective vibration damping, absorb thermal expansion and allow mechanical movement.

This helps protect piping systems and associated equipment from mechanical stress and premature failure.

The proven design, combined with strict quality control procedures, delivers reliable performance and a long service life under demanding operating conditions.

Dilatoflex® rubber expansion joints are used in the main cooling lines of nuclear power plants worldwide, including turbine and condenser systems.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

In a nuclear power plant, the service life of expansion joints depends entirely on their material and their location (primary, secondary, or auxiliary cooling circuits). They are systematically replaced preventively during outages. Under operating conditions conforming to nominal specifications, the estimated service life of special BPO-type joints (particularly turbine/condenser connections) is 15 to 20 years. Preventive replacement is scheduled during major overhauls or outages.

Yes, according to the project engineering specifications, these components fall within the framework of the rules for the design and production of mechanical equipment for nuclear islands (RCC-M), in particular for the traceability of materials (metal flanges in carbon steel or 304L/316L stainless steel) and the calculation of earthquake resistance.

Dilatoflex® has a specific “Nuclear” certification that is continuously audited. The products meet the quality assurance requirements required by major clients (EDF Qualification). ISO19443 certification is in preparation.

Expansion joints and long-length joints (e.g. types BPO / Dog-Bone, BC1, or type U) are mainly installed on:

  • The critical connection circuit between the turbine and the condenser (conventional island).
  • Raw water circuits, pumping stations and main (sea or river water circulation circuits) and auxiliary cooling systems.

Yes, for safety-classified circuits (for example, the emergency raw water circuit). The expansion joints must pass seismic qualification tests (shaking table tests or finite element calculations) to prove that they maintain their structural integrity and watertightness during and after a reference earthquake.
