Operating principles
The diagrams below illustrate the types of movements and absorption capacities of Dilatoflex® expansion joints.
lnMinimum manufacturing length
lcLength in compression
leLength in extension
rValue of the lateral displacement, it is at its nominal manufacturing length (ln) that we can obtain the maximum value of the shear admissible by the expansion joint.
αValue of the angular displacement, it is at its nominal manufacturing length (ln) that we can obtain the maximum value of the angular displacement admissible by the expansion joint
The expansion bellows absorbs vibrations.
The expansion bellows attenuates water hammer. It does not replace anti-water hammer systems that may otherwise exist.

Frequently Asked Questions
Our expansion joints are multidirectional and can accommodate:
- Axial compression.
- Axial extension.
- Lateral movements (shear).
- Angular movements.
The service life depends on the operating conditions, including temperature, the aggressiveness of the medium, and exposure to UV radiation. However, a properly selected and installed Dilatoflex® expansion joint is known for its exceptional durability, thanks to the quality of its elastomers.
Yes, certain models are designed for vacuum service. For high vacuum values, internal vacuum rings can be fitted to prevent the expansion joint from collapsing.
It depends on the material. Our ES quality (for superheated water/steam) can reach up to +140°C. Standard qualities (EPDM, Nitrile) generally operate up to +90°C or +100°C.
